Charlton 3 Ipswich 1

CHARLTON central defender Jonathan Fortune will be fined and disciplined for his stoppage time dismissal in Saturday's 3-1 home win against Ipswich.

Referee Neil Swarbrick immediately produced a red card after Fortune appeared to elbow Ipswich striker Alan Lee.

"It was the only downside of the afternoon," said manager Alan Pardew. "He suffered a moment of madness which will cost him as he will be fined and disciplined. It will also cost him his place in the side.

"It was such a shame because I thought our first-half performance was sublime. It probably matched the first half performance we put in here against West Ham last season.

"I was so pleased because we showed the home fans what we're capable of after several disappointments at The Valley."

Darren Ambrose, a graduate of the Ipswich youth policy, gave Charlton the tonic of a sixth minute lead when he headed home a cross from Matt Holland, another Ipswich old boy.

Chris Iwelumo's eighth goal of the season increased the lead in the 31st and when Ambrose cracked a spectacular second in the 40th minute, the outcome appeared a formality.

But Ipswich came out all the more determined in the second half when Charlton goalkeeper Nicky Weaver saved Lee's 48th minute penalty.

Ipswich substitute Danny Haynes was out of luck with a 55th minute header that struck the underside of the bar before fellow substitute Pablo Counago's cheeky back-heel pulled back a goal in the 70th minute to produce a barnstorming finish in front of The Valley's biggest crowd of the season.

Charlton: Weaver, Mills, Fortune, Sodje, Powell (Bougherra 87), Sam (Semedo 72), Holland, Zheng, Ambrose, Reid (Varney 83), Iwelumo.

Subs Not Used: Randolph, McLeod.

Attendance: 24,680.
