One of the best kept secrets in Kent is that some of Europe's finest restaurants are located just 21 miles away across the English Channel in Calais.
Which makes it all the more surprising that more residents of the county don’t treat themselves to a trip across the water to try for themselves some superlative French cuisine.
You could travel across the Channel in style on a P&O ferry and then book a sumptuous meal for two in one of Calais' best restaurants. It is the perfect way to sample the food in one of France's most celebrated culinary regions.
Janette Bell, managing director of P&O Ferries, said: "The culture of eating out is still hugely popular in Calais and given the quality of their restaurants it's easy to see why.
"I think that one of the best days out for anyone living in Kent is to travel across the Channel with P&O Ferries and then enjoy lunch or dinner in the heart of Calais."
Calais has been synonymous with good food since Roman times, when the writer Pliny made reference to its variety of fruit and vegetables. Situated at the crossroads of Europe, in the centuries since Calais has benefited from many culinary influences.
Today the Calais region is a major producer of cheese, the most famous of which being the exquisite maroille. And the nearby coastline is home to France's largest fishing port, Boulogne.
Given this rich heritage, it is perhaps unsurprising that a cluster of the highest class restaurants has grown up in Calais itself, some of which are serviced by Michelin-starred chefs.
Diners can enjoy mouthwatering meals which would cost twice the price in Paris or London.
