There were great celebrations when the Ashford Golf Club ladies Pearson Trophy team qualified for the Kent finals for the second year running.

On May 23 the team of Jenny Spedding, Jenny Ursell, Corrie Butcher, Karen Pickering, Shell Foster, Shirley Goldwin and Pauline Pfeffer coped well with the tricky Mid Kent course and had an excellent five games to two away win.

The return match was at Ashford the following week and the home team were obviously in the driving seat as even a 4 to 3 loss would have secured their place in the final.

However, nerves were on edge in front of a large group of loyal supporters.

But again, the team came through with a decisive 5-2 win. The team saw two changes as Jenny Ursell and Pauline Pfeffer were unavailable, but were ably replaced by Wendy Kendall and Beryl Sutherland who both won their matches.

Other players during the Pearson season were Sue Norman, Eileen Wharton, Sheila Woodgate and Ruth Pickworth.

The finals day is on June 19 at Tenterden Golf Club where Ashford will meet Westerham in one semi-final and Littlestone will play last year’s winner, Nizels, in the other.
